Black Gold dives deep into the life and eventual death by consumption of a coffee bean. Coffee, a multi-billion dollar commodity second only to oil, is nearly as pervasive in our lives as oil itself. Over the years, as the price of coffee continues to drop, the strain has become worse than ever for the third world coffee growers who supply the vast majority of the Western worlds java supply. Starvation, despair, and roadblocks to progress are all consequences of the current state of affairs.
The creators of Black Gold hope to demonstrate that changes can be made just with one cup of coffee. Really, they pitch a great case, and with tools such as the coffee calculator, where the money is going. Ultimately, Tadesses hope is that if people can see and hear the plight of his farmers and farmers like them from around the world, viewers will be motivated to act. The first step, though, is to listen to his story.
